EPL
technology comes from extensive research into the causes of outdoor
wood coating failure. Wood is basically a biodegradable sponge.
CCA and ACQ take care of the bio problems. EPL addresses the wood's
surface problems. The key properties of expansion, contraction and
rebonding of the EPL film are essential. EPL will heal itself
(reform and rebond even after it looks like it has failed). EPL
film will do this over and over again until the wood eventually
remains dry, even after a couple of seasons. You need to provide
patience (until warm, dry weather returns) and persistence (recoat
as necessary) to get there.
Sealers and stains consist of oils and pigments that
soak into the wood. Paints consist of binder and pigment that lay
on the surface of the wood. EPL is a cross between these extremes
that will absorb deep into the wood while leaving a significant
plastic protection on the surface.
Plastic wearlayers vary widely in longevity. It always
depends on thickness of the film and adhesion. The best performance,
in our studies comes when you achieve about 4 mils. EPL delivers
about 1 mil of plastic with each application. So start now (2 coats
the first year and 1 each year after) and you can have plastic coated
pressure treated wood on your deck or playset.
